2020 RAM 1500 vs 2020 Ford F-150

2020 RAM 1500 vs 2020 Ford F-150

As the winner of the MotorTrend Truck of the Year award in 2019, the Ram 1500 holds a solid place as a leader in the work truck market. With a new refresh available in the showrooms, will the model keep hold of its position?

To find out, we've pitted the 2020 Ram 1500 features against those of a close rival, the high-selling 2020 Ford F-150.

Standard Powertrain Options

While both trucks offer a variety of powertrain options, it's at the base level where the difference between the vehicles is most obvious. The standard Ram 1500 comes with a meaty 3.6L V6 engine producing 305 horsepower, while the Ford lags behind with a 3.3L V6 putting out 290 hp.

While this may not seem a huge difference, it shows up clearly under working conditions. For example, the Ram's payload capacity is comfortably ahead of the Ford at 806kg compared to 747kg. The Ram also edges ahead in maximum towing capacity, with figures of 3465kg compared to 3451kg.

The Ram 1500's extra power also shows up in acceleration, where it reaches 0-60mph in a respectable 7.5 seconds compared to the Ford's 7.9 seconds. The difference is even more dramatic when accelerating with a trailer attached. Pulling a weight of over 1,500kg, the Ram reaches 0-60mph in 12.3 seconds, leaving the Ford far behind with its figure of 13.9 seconds.

The Ram's powertrain advantage is sealed by the smooth 8-speed automatic transmission, which offers a more responsive drive than the Ford's more basic 6-speed automatic.

Fuel Economy

For a work truck seeing heavy use, fuel economy is important. Both trucks offer very similar figures, although the Ram has a lead with a combined rating of 11.2L / 100km compared to the Ford's 11.7L / 100km.

However, the Ford has a slight advantage in fuel tank size, with a capacity of 98.4L compared to the Ram's 87L.

Cabin and Interior Features

Both vehicles have a seating capacity of six, but when it comes to interior cargo space, the Ram wins out. It offers a healthy maximum of 1826L while the Ford only provides a more meagre 1470L.

Ford have often lagged behind other makers when it comes to interior technology features. The 2020 version of the F-150 finally has the option of a touchscreen infotainment system, but many reviewers have reported a slightly disappointing response time and an overall lack of polish.

In contrast, the Ram 1500 offers a slick 8.4" Uconnect navigation system which is upgradeable to an impressive 12" version, giving the Ram a clear edge in this area. Add to that the active noise cancellation technology to give a quieter ride, and the Ram feels altogether more comfortable and upscale.
